Yi’s lacquer ware features simple and unsophisticated styles,bright colors,as well as simple and unadorned decorations.Its unique style makes it a representative of the Yi handicraft art.According to legend,the Yi lacquer ware has a history of over 1700 years.In early times,in order to adapt to their nomadic life,the ancient Yi people used solid woods and leather wares and gradually made them widely used.Later,the wood and leather wares were decorated with more beautiful patterns,which pushed forward the development and production of lacquer ware.The most well known lacquer ware was made in Liangshan.With the improvement of their techniques,the Yi people gradually use wood,leather,bamboo and horn,as well as ox horn,pig’s feet and eagle claw,to make lacquer ware.They also mix raw lacquer with red,yellow and black dyes for coating,and develop various techniques for decoration,including colored painting,carving,mosaic and embossed lacquer ,etc.
